Time Well Spent
When I think of the word ‘becoming’ I think of something being in the midst of a transition, in process, a journey, unfinished or under construction.
In the process of becoming, there is still an opportunity and time for corrections. It is during that process where you have the freedom to figure things out. That is the training ground, the season of learning and fine-tuning.
In order to become devoted to someone or something you must see the value in it first. It or they have to be worth something for you to set aside all else. In the process of devotion, you have taken the time to look at this on different levels. You have perhaps spent time, weathered a couple of seasons, and nowhave a better understanding of things.
Much like the relationships, the vocations or careers we choose, our relationship with God requires at least the same tenacity. It is so important to be really rooted and grounded in the Word of God to avoid being easily swayed. We have to grow into a place of self-discipline. That growth comes from a want to. Your want to or desire gains endurance with experience. You learn how to navigate situations and learn to better communicate in relationships. You establish better and stronger study skills and begin to delve into your own research on different topics when you are devoted to your career.
1 Peter 2:2-3 KJV says “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.”
When you have history with a person or a thing it is easier to beeither with or against them. We as a people as humans tend to look at the track record of a thing when we consider investing our money into it. We read Yelp reviews for new restaurants, consumer and Carfax ratings for vehicles and I don’t know about you but I believe those pictures that are submitted with the Amazon reviews literally make or break my decision. We depend on consistency. We want to see what we are getting into.It is very easy to get behind something when it has proven to be faithful and reliable repeatedly. How much more with God? When we consider our devotion to the effort put into our relationship with God, we should not just look at the future but also the past. When we read our Word, we should read with the mindset of getting to know Him. What is His track record? What is He capable of? Are you going to get a good return on your investment? Let’s be clear, our investment is nothing compared to the investment and down payment that was made for you and I. In fact, the question should be is He going to get a good return on His investment. Was the sacrifice worth it? Each day that we are breathing and living we are walking in the investment that was made on our behalf. God continues to choose us each day and that speaks volumes to our individual worth.
“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.” 1 Corinthians 15:58 KJV.
When you build on something, it should be with purpose. The time spent should have meaning. There should be an expectation to come out on the other side with a better understanding. You absolutely should feel as though you know more and are better equipped than when you started. Our process of becoming a more devoted follower, disciple of Christ should be navigated with an open mind. Our ears should be tuned to hear His voice. Our eyes should be continuously looking for God’s hand in oureveryday lives. That is where the gratitude for the little things shows up. Our hearts should be open to receive the love that God so generously bestows upon us. In my journey of becoming more devoted to God I am trying to learn with an eagerness that sets the atmosphere for the Holy Spirit to show up and move in ways that are beyond my imagination. Not showing up with a pre-fabricated mind and a made up heart can change your experience along the journey of devotion.
